Chances are that you receive a variety of book club offers in the mail every month. Most book clubs offer their member an initial sign up bonus much like CD or DVD clubs where your first few books can be purchased for only a few pennies plus shipping, or are completely free. In addition to getting the books you will also often get another free gift such as a duffle bag or fancy bookmark. You are then required to purchase only a few additional books over the course of your membership contract at the regular club rate.
Books clubs can either be a fantastic deal or a horrible trap depending on how they operate. Before joining any book club make sure that you read all of the fine print of the contract you are signing, and are completely clear on how many books you are going to be required to buy and under what time period.
You also want to take careful note of how much the regular club price of books you purchase from the book club is going to be and how much shipping and handling typically costs per book. You may be receiving a terrific savings on the books that you are purchasing right now, but you often will have to pay for that savings in higher book costs and very high shipping charges on the additional book you are required to purchase from the club.
Weigh out what your overall cost of membership is going to be, and if it is really going to be a deal. If you still think the books you are going to get are going to be a fantastic deal, then go ahead and sign up, otherwise you may be better off purchasing your book from the local bookstore.
