Independent bookstores

There was a time not to long ago when the only bookstore available was an independent bookstore. Even as recently as 1991, independent bookstores constituted the largest segment of the market with a 32% share. However, the combined onslaught of chain bookstores and online bookstores led to the share of independent bookstores falling to 17.2% by 1997. It has been estimated that more than 1000 independent bookstores shut in the 1990s itself. They now constitute only the third largest segment in the market, behind both chain bookstores and online bookstores.

Independent bookstores were impacted by both the lower prices of books at chain bookstores and online bookstores and the greater range offered by them. Some independent bookstores also claim that they were victims of predatory pricing – the chain bookstores in their neighborhoods just slashed prices to a level that they couldn’t match and they had to go out of business.

In recent times, independent bookstores have been putting up a fight through the American Booksellers Association, a group of about 3500 independent bookstores. Some of them have converted to specialty bookstores and differentiated themselves with the depth of books they offer in their area and the kinds of events they host. Others have focused on service as their key differentiator. This includes aspects such as more knowledgeable staff, personalized service and community activities. Some of them also offer services like book ordering if the book you are looking for is not available. Another advantage that independent bookstores offer is their easy accessibility in a neighborhood as compared to the chain stores which tend to be situated further away from towns. Independent bookstores are also emphasizing the diversity and individuality that they bring to the marketplace.

Communities, recognizing the role that independent bookstores have played in their history, have also stepped forward to help them out. It seems that no matter what independent stores will be here to fight another day.
